Most of us start off life as classically trained solo pianists. So when we turn up to church and are asked to play from chord charts, and improvise, and play in group, we often don't know where to start.

So we are proud to present a free set of video piano lessons designed to cover everything you need to get yourself up to speed on chords, improvisation and playing in a band.

Section 1: Basic chords

1.1: Basic chords

In this lesson we look at basic major and minor chords in the key of C major.

1.2 More advanced chords

In this lesson we look at more complex chords like major 7ths, minor 7ths, dominant 7ths, 2nd chords and sus chords.

1.3 Chord voicings

In this lesson we look at rearranging the notes of chords to make our playing more musical.

Section 2: Simple ideas for playing chords

2.1 Introducing the palette of ideas

In this lesson we introduce arpeggios, broken chords and the "golden technique".

2.2 Power and responsibility

Now that we have all this new power, a quick word about our responsbility as keyboard players to stay out of the way of bass players and singers.

Coming soon

More advanced chords, playing styles and song demos.

(These videos replace the old paper guide to playing in church. Incidentally, you can still download the old paper workshop notes as a PDF here.)
