"It Is Well" is one of my favourite hymns of all time, and I'm sure I'm not alone here! When my good friend Jonny Robinson found out we were doing a new version of this classic he was sceptical: "you do realise it's pretty much the best hymn ever already?" So what gives us the right to meddle with it?Well, if you know and love Mr Bliss' original melody then please, keep singing it! But if even a single person re-discovers these amazing words because of our new version then I will feel that our desecration has been justified. They're amazing words of Christian hope built, not on naive wishful thinking, but on the kind of joy that survives shipwrecks. |
