Nothing makes Sydney based worship band Garage Hymnal happier than singing life-changing truth and heart-felt praise with God’s people.
We’re a worship band. We don’t just want to play for you, we want to sing with you. And we want everything we sing together to be drenched in the passion that comes from knowing the God who has revealed himself in the Bible.
We first started playing together as the annual conference band for a campus Christian group, the Sydney University Evangelical Union. When the conference was over people kept asking us where they could get our music. So we started making albums.
Two years and two albums later, and we’re still passionate about singing with God’s people about Jesus, and what he’s done for us.
Our first album, Take My Life, was released in 2006. Soon after its release it took out a finalist position in the MusicOz awards, and live footage was syndicated on Christian TV channels across the word from Romania to the USA.
But most importantly, churches started using our songs. So in August 2007 we released Bring on the Day, an exploration of the Christian response to suffering in a fallen world. Its 12 congregational tracks speak in equal measures about the tragedy of this broken world, and about the certainty that God’s promised kingdom is coming.
So why the name? Well, for us the great hymns set the standard of what powerful words and powerful music sung together can be like. We aspire to be like Watts or Toplady, who put their own powerful experiences of faith into great songs which have given comfort and encouragement to generations of believers.
